Hi all N5 module current and future users,
Some of you may have already heard pieces about N5 module recently from your distributors, such as N548 is discontinued. What I really want you to know first is the release of our new models and other improvements, which actually allow the discontinuation. So I learned a lesson this time. I will not introduce new products and discontinue old products simultaneously next time.
I will use this post to tell you the whole story.
1. N550 and N5150
Two new series are introduced:
1. N550 series, using the nRF51422-CEAA V3 chip with 16K RAM. Already available.
2. N5150 series, using the nRF51422-CFAC with 32K RAM. Pre-orders may be placed now. Expected volume availability is at the end of September.
All new models are pin-compatible with the current N548 series and are available in the same M8 and M4 form factors with the same reel and tray packaging options. As the M5 form factor is for development purposes, we will provide the fully featured N5150M5CD (32K RAM) only.
I've create a beautiful matrix of all the N5 module models, chip used, software pre-loaded. You can check it out
here or from the
datasheet.
2. ANT Feature Enhancements in S210 and S310
These new N5 models are loaded with the newly released SoftDevice S210 V5.0.0, which includes two major enhancements to better serve today’s evolving wireless connection needs:
a. The number of independent ANT channels supported has increased from 8 to 15.
These bidirectional channels on a given device can be either slave or master, capable of forming complex, flexible and scalable network topologies for IOT networks. For personal wearable application, this enhancement enable a hub, e.g. a watch, a bike computer, to link to up to 15 different sensors at the same time.
b. All 15 ANT channels are now capable of data encryption.
These ANT feature enhancements are also found in the ANT/BLE dual protocol SoftDevice S310 V3.0.0.
3. EN 300 328 V1.9
Many N5 module customers using the BLE mode have asked us to add EN 300 328 V1.9 to the EU compliance suite. We appreciate your input and patience, and are happy to deliver this report and an updated CE declaration of conformity on request. Having this standard been added, our compliance engineers still believe passing EN 300 440-2 would remove the need for EN 300 328. Now that N5 module have both EN 300 328 and EN 300 440-2, let your test lab make the choice.
4. Last Time Buy of N548
We are also announcing the discontinuation and last time buy period of the N548 module series (N548M4CB, N548M5CB and N548M8CB models). While the true reason is the end of life of the nRf51422 V2 chip, the release of N550 lets us set the timing for N548. Current N548 module customers should naturally transition to the N550 series. Cheers,
Thomas
