As an example, I need bed time and wake time data for user. Ideally I'd like this data to be part of the user profile. Is it ok to add fields to the existing message? I would assume best to assign a high field number, say >128. Or is there an existing or better way to do this, hopefully without resorting to adding another file?      

unfortunately you cannot add mfg specific fields to defined FIT messages... you have two options:

1. contact us to have the fields added
2. create a mfg specific message with those fields (e.g. manufacturer_user_profile.bed_time and manufacturer_user_profile.wake_time)

option 1 will allow you the most interoperability
option 2 - you can still place this message in a settings file, however only your devices will be able to interpret them.      

Interoperability is the goal, so can the fields be added to user profile message?
