Getting started with Extended Display Device Profile (Varia Vision)

I'm working on an nRF52832 hardware project and want to interface with the Garmin Varia Vision. I've checked under the device profile documentation pdf downloads page the but the Extended Display Device Profile isn't listed with the others.

Where can I find the documentation on the device profile?

Is there any example code for the connection between an nrf52 and an Extended Display?

Sorry if I just can't find it and it's somewhere obvious...

I've read in a few places around thisisant.com that the Extended Display profile pdf is on the downloads page. Now I'm wondering if it's there, but hidden under the hidden "MEMBER EARLY RELEASE" section.

Can anyone with full member status confirm if the information I seek is available to full members, but not adopters?

I'm currently an adopter, working on personal projects, and $1500 for some documentation is out of my budget. It would be strange if the Extended Display profile were considered an "early release" since the Varia Vision came out around 2015-2016 I think and is now discontinued, but I can't think of why else the documentation would not be available on the downloads page with all the other device profile pdfs.

I can confirm that the EXD profile is in Member Early Release. This status is a result of changes to the profile that occurred in 2019.

Thanks for looking into it.

Is there a way for me to get access to the documentation before the changes in 2019? Since I'm working with the Varia Vision, it was discontinued before then and the changes likely won't apply to my use case.

My project is at a stand-still. If anyone can help me find this documentation, please PM me.

If there ever was a public release before the changes mentioned above in 2019, I can't find any archived copy of it, or any mention.

It doesn't make sense to me why the Extended Display profile seems not to have been been released publicly in all these years, even after the Varia Vision was released and then discontinued. Is there somewhere I can make an appeal to release the documentation?

Yes, i have a similar problem.

I'd like to know whether the extended display device profile would enable my scenario. However, I can't read that profile without coughing up $1500 bucks to get membership level access. As others have said, clearly devices shipped with this profile.

the specific thing i'm trying to figure out is how segregated/typed the extended display device is eg. is it bitmapped display items or are the messages like 'navigation update'/'some info'.

thanks,

Is there any status update on the Extended Display profile, sometimes also referred to as the Remote Display profile? It's been more than a year since I last queried on this topic.

I think this profile might has some applicability to an accessibility story for various disabilities depending on how the information is communicated eg. 'summarized data or bitmaps. This question would be easy to resolve if i could read the profile.

Been a while since I worked on this. My ultimate conclusion at the time was that the device was a very well made bit of hardware that could have been incredibly useful in a lot of fields, but lack of developer documentation limited it to only being used for garmin products. Frustratingly, although the Ant protocol is supposed to be open, garmin shipped this device using an ANT encryption key that will not allow the extended device profile to be activated without it, as in, it won't connect to anything that isn't garmin, and developers cannot use the profile. Developers were only ever given access to simulate their own garmin compatible sensors, etc. So without a garmin controller, the display refuses most modes including the extended display profile.

Really wish they would release a new version and give us real access to put anything on the screen using any BLE device like a ESP32...

After all this time, I can't remember the reason, but I was fairly certain that the EXD profile did allow for an image to be uploaded. I observed something that convinced me. The problem was not having the key / documentation on protocol to do it.

Anyone else made progress on this? I've since sold my device, but I might buy another if anyone is still working on this.       [ Edited: 05 August 2023 04:31 AM by Redacted ]

Shifting gears to a different topic, let me address your inquiry about acquiring funds through a money loan service via a loan app like speedy cash, you can read review here https://samedayfin.com/loans-like-speedy-cash.php. It's important to approach such financial transactions with caution and responsibility. Many loan apps provide a convenient platform for users to borrow money, but it's crucial to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions, interest rates, and repayment plans associated with the loan. Ensure that the loan service is reputable and complies with relevant financial regulations.

Taking loans through apps typically involves a straightforward process where users can apply, get approval, and receive funds directly into their accounts. However, it's essential to borrow only what you can afford to repay, considering the interest and any associated fees. Failure to repay on time can lead to additional charges and negatively impact your credit score.

Hello there! It's unfortunate to hear about your challenges with the device. Your insights into the potential of the hardware and frustration with the limitations imposed by Garmin's choices are shared by many in the community.
The closed nature of the Ant protocol, despite its supposed openness, has indeed hindered the device's versatility. The reliance on Garmin-specific encryption keys creates a barrier for developers who seek to explore the full potential of the extended device profile.
Your suggestion for a new version with more open access to the display, especially using BLE devices like ESP32, resonates with the desire for greater flexibility among users and developers.
As for progress, it would be interesting to hear if anyone in the community has made advancements in overcoming these limitations since your last involvement. The potential to upload images through the EXD profile, if the right key and documentation were available, could open up exciting possibilities.
